The refurbishment and refit of commercial offices at 236 Grays Inn Road for Telereal Trilium was a major project, with the ceiling area measuring 2,300m2. The client, architect and contractor were tasked with meeting aesthetic, acoustic and environmental challenges on this jobsite. Armstrong Ceilings were finally selected as the preferred supplier due to their dedication to recycling and their established market leadership for both aesthetics and performance in suspended ceilings systems.

Armstrong’s unique End of Life recycling programme includes most types of Armstrong mineral fibre tiles produced after January 2000, and these can be 100% recycled using a highly efficient process which involves breaking the old tiles down into a slurry and using it as a raw material for making new Armstrong Ceiling tiles. A true “cradle to cradle” extended life cycle.

Mitie Interiors (Design and Build) had originally tried to recycle some material from the site via a third party, but for various reasons this proved unsuccessful.

Mitie Interiors approached Armstrong to recycle 2,300m2 of old Dune Tegular tiles. Mitie was responsible for getting the ceilings ready for shipping and organising storage whilst still on site. Under Armstrong’s new End of Life recycling programme the old tiles were then picked up, free of charge. Just over 9 tonnes of tiles were returned to the manufacturing plant, and have been re-used in new ceilings production.

As with any office building, it was important to choose the right products around their acoustical and aesthetical performances. Armstrong’s commitment to recycling and acoustics does not come at the expense of it’s commitment to creating inspirational internal environments. The old Dune Tegular tiles were replaced with Orcal Axal ceilings, Axiom Transitions and the Bandraster suspension system. Orcal Axal combines the visual sleekness of a concealed system, with the accessibility and maintenance benefits of an exposed grid system. The clean crisp visual appearance also met the architect’s aesthetic criteria. In addition to being visually appealing, the specified Armstrong products are also ideal for acoustically challenged office spaces.

Architects Tate & Hindle Design, London, said, “We selected the metal tiles from Armstrong’s vast range of products for their acoustic performance, clean aesthetics, durability, demountability and their ability to be recycled. The chosen product fitted all of the key things we were looking for, to achieve an exceptional quality ceiling.”

Geoff Vaughan of Laser Essex, a recognised Armstrong Omega ceiling contractor explained, “As a long established Omega ceiling contractor we have vast experience in working with and installing Armstrong ceiling products, so it was no surprise that this project ran as smoothly as usual. The sixth and seventh floors of the building were entered into the AIS awards, where the judges commented on the excellent quality and vastness of the Axal installation.”
