Alpha Flight Services, Crawley, West Sussex

Industrial partitioning and storage specialist Troax (UK) Limited has designed and installed a series of secure wire mesh storage enclosures at Alpha Flight Services’ newly refurbished flight catering unit in Crawley, West Sussex. The secure enclosures are used to store duty-free merchandise such as alcohol, tobacco, perfumes and gifts supplied for inflight sales on board aircraft operated by leading airlines.

Located within a bonded area of Alpha Flight Services’ flight catering unit, the seven enclosures were installed as part of a complete refurbishment of the unit, which was carried out in a turnkey design and build project by Angleton Ltd.

Duty-free merchandise is stored securely within the enclosures before being loaded onto inflight, duty-free retail carts and transferred, fully loaded, onto the aircraft.

Troax used its Caelum industrial wire-mesh partitioning to construct the series of storage cages which were designed to maximise the use of space within the building.

Cages range from 2.5 to 4.4m in height and vary in design and size according to site requirements – two cages are two-sided and adjoin existing walls, two cages are built with three sides against an adjoining wall and there are also two parallel runs of mesh fencing attached to walls at either end. All enclosures are fitted with high, sliding, padlockable doors with double hasps for a high level of security.

Troax’s Caelum wire mesh fencing creates a highly effective, secure storage solution for this type of project as its 50 x 50mm mesh aperture size is exceptionally sturdy and is virtually impossible to reach through. Merchandise can be viewed easily yet remains completely secure, with access to the area restricted to authorised personnel.

Caelum’s wire mesh design also offers an important safety benefit – it allows smoke and heat to filter through to trigger smoke detection systems and allow the effective penetration of sprinkler systems in the event of a fire.

Troax also installed its Musca anti-collapse safety screens within the enclosures to ensure a high level of safety for staff working within the enclosures, preventing items falling from overhead racking and possibly causing injury.

Commenting on the project, David Weight at Angleton said: “The refurbishment project for Alpha Flight Services was carried out within a busy environment which had to remain fully functional while the work was carried out. Troax carried out their part of the project efficiently and within schedule, with a high standard of service at all times, and so played a vital role in the overall success of the project.”
