Architectural mesh for Sainsbury Wellcome Centre

Architectural mesh for Sainsbury Wellcome Centre

Locker Architectural Ltd supplied 3800 pixelated panels to form the façade to the Ian Ritchie-designed Sainsburys Wellcome Centre. To achieve the required dynamic effect the Locker team developed unique, custom-formulated GRP 'pixels' designed to ripple and shimmer with the changing breeze.

Each pixel is constructed from Glimmer glass mesh-reinforced resin to achieve high bending and impact strength whilst still maintaining 85% light transmission values. 3800 pixels were laser-cut to 0.6mm tolerance then edge sealed by hand.

The combined ripple effect of each pixel creates undulating waves of movement travelling across the façade that are fascinating to watch. The Glimmer pixels are UV stable and conform to BS Class O fire rating.
