Arts & Crafts style executive home, Lostock, Lancashire

Commissioned to create a substantial five-bedroom executive home in the Arts & Crafts style, architects the Pozzoni Design Group chose Redland Rosemary Medium Mixed Brindle clay plain tiles for a five-bedroom executive home in Lostock, Lancashire. The owner had visited a number of well-known homes in this style in the Lake District to gain inspiration. Mellow-coloured clay plain tiles feature in many of these buildings, and Rosemary Medium Mixed Brindle were ideally suited to this new-build project. Their brindle colour complements the brickwork and enhances the Arts & Crafts style of the house, while their small size is ideally suited to creating the property’s intricate roof details.

In keeping with the Arts & Crafts influences of the house, the roof is of an unusual design with a number of interesting features. There are eyebrows over two of the windows, one at the front and one at the rear, which were difficult to form. There is a dormer roof with bonnet hips over the garage and a tiled roof to a two-storey, semi-circular bay window. This protrudes from the front of the house, like a turret, and is a major feature of the property, formed with eight lead roll hips.

The lack of detailed drawings for this project meant that the roofing contractor, Fulwood Roofing Services, had to work closely with the joiners to ensure that the roof pitch was the same on all four elevations and that each of the hip and valley tiles sat neatly without any ‘kicking’ to ensure that the project achieved the highest possible roofing standards and an aesthetically pleasing finish.

The eyebrows on the front and rear elevations required detailed designs to be developed and much cutting and tapering of tiles. The dormer window and bonnet over the garage also required cutting of tiles. On the front turret, tiles were cut by hand to fit the shape neatly. Together with the individual lead soakers this produces a striking feature at the front of the house.
