Bath Screens transforming UK bathrooms

Bath Screens transforming UK bathrooms

Kermi offer a comprehensive range of bath and shower screens with many style options from simple hinged screens to the unique Diga bath screen, which folds back completely against the wall. The wide range of options affords designers and consumers the opportunity to create their dream bathroom.

In the quest for a hint of luxury and a desire to personalise their bathrooms with a more ‘on trend’ spa-like look and feel, consumers are replacing their old shower curtains with modern new bath and shower screens.

The effects of prolonged countrywide recession has influenced consumers to improve rather than move and the building trend for ever smaller UK bathrooms makes the choice of a shower screen to refurbish a space the best financial decision.

According to AMA Research, “the market penetration of bath and shower screens has risen dramatically over recent years”, with 66% of all households in this country owning an over-bath shower facility and around one third of us owning at least one screen.

The hotel sector has influenced the popularity of spa-like products and this has resulted in manufacturers focusing on product development with screens becoming increasingly bespoke to individual requirements. Bath screens are becoming more highly specified with the focus on functionality.

The debate on 10mm thick glass, especially in the hotel sector with architects and designers, rages on. Darren Taylor, National Sales Manager - Bathrooms for Kermi UK says : “The bathroom market seems to be fixated with the thickness of glass and perceive this must surely equal a superior product offering. Unfortunately, what the market fails to acknowledge is the overall weight bearing down from the wall and the wear and tear on the hinge mechanism over time. However, I would not be surprised to see 12mm glass next…”.

Manufacturers are agreed that the current trend is for a frameless look and confirm the challenge of delivering products which are both minimal and watertight and say that for truly frameless screens to work, installation has to be perfect.

Darren Taylor says “Our competitors use ‘frameless products’ as a selling term, but generally you find it is basically a semi-frameless offering. At Kermi, we have the facility to supply ‘true’ fully frameless products. You really need perfect perpendicular walls, floors and baths, or a visit from one of our technicians to measure and template the glass to suit every bespoke application. It is the only way to do it properly, which is why not many of our competitors offer ‘fully frameless’ solutions”.
