Type of works: design and installation of ceiling feature to office block atrium.

Bayer is a global corporation with 106,000 employees worldwide and a yearly turnover of more than 32 billion Euros. The company’s product portfolio includes such high profile brands as ProPlus, Berocca and Canesten.

J & J Carter was appointed to design and install a ceiling feature to the atrium of the three storey office block in Newbury. The interior fabric sails needed to be installed 11m in the air and the design needed to enhance the foyer of the building without restricting the light entering via the atrium.

A simple triangular steel frame was used as the hub of the design in order to suspend the sails in the 250m2 atrium. The fabric is a woven glass fibre with a PVC coating, which conforms to BS 476 for fire retardancy. Due to a complex roof truss arrangement, an accurate 3D survey and model were done to ensure total alignment of the sails with proposed fixings in the roof. A total of 86.5 square metres of fabric sails were installed in a basket weave arrangement.

A spokesperson for J & J Carter said: “Stringent attention to detail was required to ensure the finished structure met with all the health and safety requirements applicable to this type of commercial environment, whilst meeting the brief for design and aesthetics. ”
