Birmingham Ormiston Academy

Birmingham Ormiston Academy

Client: Birmingham Ormiston Academy
Type of works: supply of iQ Star chilled beam.

Fläkt Woods is delivering a range of its new iQ Star chilled beams, AHU’s and chillers as part of an integrated package for the new Birmingham Ormiston Academy.

The iQ Star is a free-hanging multi-service chilled beam, characterised by modularity, flexibility, sustainability and energy efficiency. With an aluminium profile, it incorporates an array of integrated features ranging from direct/indirect lighting with either satin louvered or the new prismatic diffuser options, PIR’s, smoke detectors, speakers and sprinklers. The project incorporates louvered luminaries and fitment of free issue emergency lighting.

Thanks to pioneering nozzle technology and smart controls, the air flow is always sufficient and adapted to suit requirements; allowing flexibility within the building’s layout. Good indoor air quality is always achievable, even if occupancy levels varying from day to day even from hour to hour. Not only are there energy savings when the room is not in use, it also keeps the students comfortable, alert and productive.

The academy is unique in offering a specialist digital media, creative and performing arts curriculum. It is sponsored by Ormiston Trust, Birmingham City University and partnered with Maverick TV and the BRIT School. The construction project will be managed and delivered by Bovis Lend Lease and opens in September 2011 for sixth form years and will include 14-16 year-olds in 2012.

Facilities at the new academy will include a 300 seat theatre, four dance studios, six rehearsal (drama) studios, 3D technology suite, open air amphitheatre and a TV studio. The TV Studio also included special paint finished Stella Beams.

Fläkt Woods is also supplying energy saving chillers, which will help reduce the overall annual energy consumption by up to 35%. The KCCJ range consumes less power in percentage terms than the cooling capacity delivered thanks to the possibility of working with exchange surfaces that are oversized in all conditions when the maximum load is not required. This ensures extremely high EER values, higher than other traditional chillers in the same category. These performance values and unparalleled intrinsic reliability makes the KCCJ an unbeatable option in terms of payback and of trouble free operation.
