Blue Phoenix UK was specified to find a sustainable solution for the imported materials required for the London Gateway infrastructure upgrade project.

Originally it was estimated that ~160,000 tonnes of a class 1A would be required. Blue Phoenix UK provided 130k tonnes due to savings using the lower density IBAA.

IBAA was spread in 225mm layers, with 4 passes using a 3600kg vibrating roller to achieve ~30% CBR. The embankment slopes were ~60 degrees in some places near the roundabout.

IBAA is an extremely cost effective material when compared to Primary Aggregates, and can be ~25% lighter than similar primary/recycled aggregates. The aggregates produced are carbon neutral using data available from Europe and UK sources.

There are also advantages logistically when using IBAA due to the low density of the material allowing for fewer vehicle movements on this very busy route to this major construction project.
