Bowling Green Lane, London

28 Nov 2010

Architect: Nissen Adams
Type of works: design and installation of an ETFE roof structure.

Novum was contracted to design, furnish and install an ETFE roof structure for an office refurbishment project in London. Working closely with the lighting contractor, Novum designed special attachment points in the steelwork to accommodate lighting fixture connections. For the AFP system membrane over the steelwork, aluminium profiles clamp each air-filled pillow at its full perimeter. Above the extrusions, an integrated bird management system is deployed to prevent unwanted perching. The transparent roof combines with the modern lighting installation to create an inviting, contemporary aesthetic.

Using the AES structural system, mild-steel RHS members and wide flange beams that are media blasted, primed and painted provide structural support for the air-filled pillows and lighting system. Aluminium profiles with an anodised finish hold each three-layer, ETFE air-filled pillow in place. The top layer has a screen print to reduce solar gain.
