This presentation gives an overview of ambient state design for composite concrete filled hollow sections, principally Eurocode 4: BS EN1994-1-1:2004.

It goes on to present a method for fire design for externally unprotected composite columns, consistent with the general principles of BS EN1994-1-2:2005.

The presentation assesses where this form of construction can provide economic, aesthetic solutions, and contains case studies on existing buildings.

It provides a comparison on cost and practicality between composite columns and traditional steel schemes, and goes on to look at the practicalities of fabrication and erection. An overview of the Tata Steel design software, Firesoft, is presented.
