Broxap worked closely with lead architects in a retrofit scheme to update an ageing 1990s bus station.

Studio Mutt was aiming for a “low-cost, high-impact” refurbishment of Pool Meadow Bus Station.

After being named the UK’s City of Culture for 2021, Coventry’s bus station needed to be transformed into a vibrant gateway to the city.

Combining lighting, planting and upgrades to wayfinding and seating, the route through the bus station was transformed into a public promenade.

Demolition and rebuilding were ruled out so Studio Mutt focused on enhancing the positive qualities of the existing bus station using paint and other material finishes.

Broxap supplied and installed a total of 28 llford Mild Steel Seats as well as 24 Derby Eros Litter Bins.

The mild steel version of the functional Ilford seats were chosen so that a powder coating finish could be applied.

Drawing on the colours in the existing pink and yellow paving slabs, the perforated seats were made to ‘pop’ with a colour coating BS381 353 - Deep Cream and RAL3020 - Traffic Red.

The bins were also powder coated in cream to match with red banding and five Sheffield Cycle Stands were given a red coating.

The seats were also manufactured with baseplate surface fixings so that there was minimal damage to the paving already in situ.

The bus station had to remain operational throughout the whole project so along with other contractors, they worked to complete the installation on a bus bay by bus bay basis so there were no closures or service disruptions caused by the works.

Works also took place over weekends to accommodate the Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) requirement for adequate attendance of staff to direct passengers to temporary stands while they were installing.

The project at Pool Meadow was one of a series of bus station improvements completed by Broxap for West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), including Stourbridge Bus Station, West Bromwich Bus Station, and Wolverhampton Bus Station.
