Croma Restaurant, Manchester

Architect: Ombler Iwanowski Architects
Type of works: installation of solid wood Luxalon ceiling system.

A solid wood Luxalon ceiling system from Hunter Douglas has contributed to the glamorous ambience at Croma, an exciting new restaurant that opened recently in the Radius development in Prestwich in Manchester.

Griff Evans of Ombler Iwanowski Architects chose a ceiling finished in American Yellow Poplar for Croma. Running the full length of the main dining area, the solid wood ceiling recedes visually, picking up hints of the wood chairs and bar below.

"Croma places an emphasis on design. Their food is not that expensive, but their restaurants make you feel glamorous," says Griff Evans. "Selecting the Luxalon ceiling was key. It was the only system or solution that gave us full control over the quality, rather than just asking a contractor to produce a wood ceiling that would eventually warp."

"The ceiling’s acoustic function combined with the random effect of the American Poplar finish – mixing dark planks and lighter planks – works well. We hung lighting tacks on the ceiling, pulling them away so you perceive the ceiling plane as one continuous piece of wood, which is reflected in the mirror wall."

The large open space features mostly hard surfaces and finishes so the ceiling’s excellent acoustic performance was a major benefit. The panels incorporate a non-woven acoustic fleece tissue bonded to the inside face which reduces sound reverberation time, leading to a quieter environment.

The light wood finish contributed to the feeling of light and space, while complementing the wood chairs and architectural elements below.

The Hunter Douglas solid wood range is available in an extensive collection of different species that enhance the mood of any space, creating a warm natural atmosphere. Three different systems are available, suitable for interiors and exteriors, with curved or undulating ceilings also possible.

The system features a unique design that enables faster installation and all the panels can be demounted for easy access to services.
