Glasgow’s NHS renaissance continues apace with the opening of two new hospitals which have a healthy regard for energy saving – helped by a double dose of roofing insulation from Kingspan.

Balfour Beatty was responsible for the construction of the two new hospitals – Stobhill Hospital and the New Victoria Hospital in a contract worth £180 million. These projects herald the overall modernisation of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s acute hospitals: with investments of over £750 million over the next six years.

Though designed by different architects (Reiach & Hall for Stobhill; and HLM Architects for New Victoria) the hospitals have in common a flat roof design incorporating energy conserving insulation from Kingspan Insulation.

In both cases the roofing was installed and specified by Glasgow-based Miller Roofing. David Thomson explained the company’s preference for Kingspan Insulation for the contract. He said “We changed the originally specified tapered insulation to Kingspan Thermataper as we had used it before and were happy with the product. Following discussions with Kingspan Insulation sales staff, we worked very closely to ensure that deliveries were co-ordinated to suit a call off system by areas, which we had instigated due to the size of the roof. This worked very well and helped us to comply with the tight programme.”

The Kingspan Thermataper TT47 LPC/FM system was used to provide integral falls to the flat roofing at both hospitals – creating drainage and insulation in one easy application. The design for the New Victoria Hospital also called for Kingspan Thermaroof TR27 LPC/FM high-performance rigid insulation to be installed under a Sarnafil single-ply membrane.

Both products provide unrivalled insulation for flat roofs on low carbon, low energy buildings and have a thermal conductivity as low as 0.025 W/m.K. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has committed itself to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 25% by 2016 and the Kingspan Insulation products will make a significant contribution to this goal.

The “green” design of the hospitals - both of which lay claim to being among Scotland’s largest - has helped NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde graduate from the Carbon Trust’s Carbon Management Programme.
