Double Win for Garda Illuminated Handrail at LUX Awards 2011

Double Win for Garda Illuminated Handrail at LUX Awards 2011

DW Windsor was highly honoured to win the Award for Urban Lighting at the inaugural LUX Awards Ceremony held at Chelsea Football Ground on 9th November 2011.

The scheme recognised was Essex Street Steps London, using the popular Garda handrail to illuminate the aging Victorian steps between the Royal Courts of Justice and Temple tube station. This saw off stiff competition for the most outstanding lighting refurbishment in the public realm.

Alan Grant, DW Windsor’s Design and Development Director, who received the award said: ‘we are very proud to receive this award for Garda. It is very encouraging to think our industry recognises the attention to detail we put into not only designing Garda, but also the whole scheme and installation process.’

Dave Franks, City of Westminster commented on the scheme: ‘utilising DW Windsor’s Garda illuminated handrail has enabled us to effectively and safely light Essex steps, whilst reducing the carbon footprint of the site through reducing maintenance cycles. We are extremely happy as this solution has ticked all the boxes; improving public and workforce safety, reducing environmental impact and it operates with our central management system’.

Garda, which uses LED technology with symmetric or genuine asymmetric distribution, received a double recognition with a highly commended for the Luminaire of the Year, Exterior category at the LUX Awards. This is the second ‘highly commended’ awarded to Garda: it also received this accolade at the Lighting Design Awards 2011.

DW Windsor was also commended under the Environmental Manufacturer of the Year category, which was awarded for the progress made in continual reduction in waste and energy. Specific targets have been set to reduce landfill by 10 tonnes with the introduction of captured waste recycling. Consideration is given, starting at the initial design brief, to materials offering recyclability of 97%. Ongoing investment in equipment will aid these objectives and benefit both environmental and commercial targets.

DW Windsor was accredited with the ISO 14001 for their Environmental Management System in March 2011.

Managing Director Terry Dean commented ‘being commended for the Lux Award for the Environmental Manufacturer of the Year is an extremely rewarding achievement for all at DW Windsor. As a UK Manufacturer we feel it is our responsibility to steer customers towards sustainable product choices. DW Windsor’s vision is to ultimately become a zero landfill business with a number of initiatives in the pipeline to align environmental responsibility and integrity at the heart of our business philosophy’.
