Dunham-Bush supplies trench heating to achieve BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating

Winner of the UK’s most prestigious prize for new buildings, the Library of Birmingham comprises performance spaces, rooftop terraces and a large glass-topped central book rotunda that rises through the middle of the building. Temperature control specialist, Dunham-Bush, has recently installed more than 700 metres of its trench heating to improve energy efficiencies through the building.

Dunham-Bush installed Hydrocourse HTA-10 trench heating along the whole perimeter of the building on all floors as an energy efficient solution, working alongside M&E consultants, Couch Perry Wilkes. The heating is designed to complement the contemporary steel and glass construction which features full height glazing in many areas.

Mike Holding, Managing Director of Dunham-Bush, explains: “Trench heating provides a more even distribution of heat compared with a traditional radiator system, resulting in a comfortable and consistent environment within the building. A typical trench heating system contains considerably less water than in a traditional radiator system, resulting in faster warm up, improved response during the operational periods and efficient shut down all helping to reduce energy consumption. A further advantage of trench heating system is that they exhibit lower hydraulic resistances and therefore lower pump energy is required which in turn improves overall efficiency of the system.”

The trench heating at the Library of Birmingham frees wall space and maximises the usable floor space available, and has the additional benefit of combatting the cold down drafts and condensation often associated with full and half height glazing.

Holding continues, “Our trench heating casings and elements can be manufactured to meet specific project requirements and fit within the floor void.” As the case, element and grille are all manufactured at Dunham-Bush’s UK factory, it is able to offer bespoke solutions including curved trench, stainless steel grilles in both linear and standard arrangements as well as complete range of anodised aluminium grilles in a range of colours if required.
