The challenge

A busy national go-karting events site was in need of resurfacing in the paddock area. Whilton Mill Karting & Outdoor Activities is a very busy site that is used for high profile national go-karting events. The paddock area was to be used as a drop off area for the Go-Karting teams and their karts arriving to the site via HGVs. The area would also be used as a base for the teams and drivers. Due to the busy nature of the whole site, surfacing works would have to be carried out with a little disruption as possible. The client could not afford to have the site closed for any length of time. After early engagement with the Tarmac’s Technical Product Support Manager, ULTIFASTPAVE was suggested as a time saving, sustainable solution.

Our solution

ULTIFASTPAVE is a single layer asphalt solution for car parks and link roads that replaces a binder and surface course approach and allows reductions in costs and contractor time. Designed as a 14mm nominal sized product that provides a dense finish, it has proven to be an invaluable solution to save time on planned resurfacing. It would be used in a single 80mm layer on top of a well compacted receiving course. The single layer approach reduces manual operations, while heat retention during laying improves compaction, reduces voids andthereby improves long term durability. This proposal would reduce the construction time by half compared to conventional surfacing and generate a significant saving in material costs and disruption for the client.

Results and benefits

1,547 tonnes of ULTIFASTPAVE was supplied by Tarmac and used to resurface the 8000m2 paddock area of the circuit. Using this efficient single layer solution delivered a time saving of four days compared to the original programme. This minimised the site closure and meant less operation disruption and lost business for the client. It also delivered a more sustainable outcome as less material was used overall compared to a binder and surface course approach. Both the contractor Charmac and their client were delighted with the outcome: “We had to get the facility handed over within minimal down time. We saved around 4 days in laying time. Being a single layer solution, it also meant we could open sections up for the events team to carry on working whilst we completed the entirety of the works.” Alex Salt, Commercial Manager, Charmac Ltd.
