Full Steam Ahead With Cembrit Shingles

Eastern White Cedar shingles from leading roofing specialist, Cembrit, have been used in a quirky refurbishment project, which has seen two railway carriages integrated into a holiday home.

The carriages form part of the accommodation and the white/grey shingles are the ideal roof covering to complement the unique appearance of the carriage while ensuring that the roof performs to modern performance standards.

Located in Wool, Dorset, the carriages can be traced back to 1878, and were bought by the current owner’s family in 1923. Local builder Chris Wakelin & Son carried out the unusual project to incorporate the carriages into the 2 bedroom holiday home. With their fine, even grain, low density and light weight but robust character, Eastern White Cedar shingles were an ideal choice for the project.

“I found the Eastern White Cedar Shingles in a local stockist almost by accident” Says Chris Wakelin. “I had originally wanted a red coloured roofing material, but when I saw the grey/white shingles I knew I had found my roofing material. I liked the colour because it blends in well, and I think the shingles add an individual quality to the roof that is in harmony with the whole ethos of the project. I came away from the project impressed with the quality of the product and the after sales support I received.”

Cembrit import Eastern White cedar shingles from Canada where they have a long history of use in all types of building project. The shingles are cut from cedar blocks, trimmed to create square corners and are pre-graded according to the frequency of knots, which give the wood its character. As well as being attractive, Eastern White cedar shingles are a sustainable building material. A naturally occurring preservative gives the cedar shingles a resistance to fungal, insect and moisture decay removing the need for chemical treatment. For enhanced durability, Cembrit also offer a factory treated option. Off cuts are mulched for use by gardeners and landscaping professionals so none of the cut timber is wasted.

Using skills built up over 80 years, Cembrit offers a wide range of cladding panels, corrugated sheet and natural and man-made roofing slate. Quality levels at group factories are rigorously maintained to high standards with many products manufactured under the control of ISO 9001 and British Board of Agrément. Cembrit UK is a member of Cembrit Holding A/S (formerly the Dansk Eternit Holding A/S) of Denmark, one of Europe’s major building material producers of fibre reinforced cement products for the roofing and cladding industry. The ultimate parent company FL Smith this year celebrates its 125 year anniversary.
