Shaping the future
Worcester recognises the importance of working with industry organisations and the Government toward a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly future.
The Governments plan to combat climate change has resulted in requirements to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 20%, by 2010 and 80% by 2050.
Approximately one third of the UKs CO2 emissions come from the domestic heating sector. With this in mind, Worcester has a vital role to play in providing the products which will reduce the amount of CO2 emissions from the production of heating and hot water in the home.
Worcesters energy efficient Greenstar boilers, and renewable energy products such as Greenskies solar water heating, are key to providing solutions to registered social landlords, developers, installers and homeowners for reducing energy consumption, fuel bills and CO2 emissions.
Efficient boiler technology
All Worcester Greenstar condensing boilers are SEDBUK Band A rated, the highest efficiency band achievable. They are more than 90% efficient, which means that over 90% of the fuel consumed is converted into heat for the heating and hot water system.
By comparison, many older boilers, which are still being used throughout the UK, can sometimes operate at as low as only 60% efficiency. The term condensing is derived from the creation of condensation within a boilers heat exchanger or flue. When combustion of any kind takes place water vapour is always produced - this liquid usually needs to be conveyed away from the boiler to a drain via a plastic discharge pipe run by the installer.
In a standard efficiency boiler the flue gas temperature is kept relatively high to avoid condensation and its related issues. But in a Greenstar high efficiency boiler, much of the heat produced in the combustion process is absorbed by the heat exchanger meaning very little is wasted to the atmosphere via the flue, hence less fuel is burned to achieve the same results.
In addition to Greenstar high efficiency condensing boilers, Worcester also provides a selection of renewable heating solutions including Greenskies solar water heating systems, which can provide 50 to 70% of a households annual hot water. The solar panels do not need direct sunlight to operate; they can provide usable energy on cloudy days too.
Worcesters Greenstore ground-source heat pumps and Greensource air-source heat pump collections can also dramatically reduce fuel bills. Air-source heat pumps work in a similar way to ground-source technology, except the air-source heat pumps take energy from natural air rather than the ground, transforming it into latent heat for the home.
Environment 2020 awards
In 2000, as part of its commitment to promote environmental awareness within the industry, Worcester launched the.Environment 2010 Awards. They were recently renamed to reflect the landmark year set by the UK government to reduce carbon emissions by 20%. Ultimately, the Environment 2020 Awards are intended to celebrate and promote activities dedicated to conserving the environment for future generations.
The Awards consist of four categories: images (childrens art competition), self-build, specification and installation. They are judged by a panel of environmental experts and industry specialists, headed by a leading figure relevant to each category.
The South Yorkshire Housing Association was one of the 2008 specifier winners for a new regeneration housing project in Canklow, Rotherham, developed in partnership with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. The aim for Canklow is to try to change the current public perception of the area, the new development now provides a desirable environment and modern, energy efficient homes for current residents, as well as attracting new people to the area.
As part of the project, 71 newly built properties incorporate a Worcester Greenstar CDi boiler and Greenskies solar panels to provide an environmentally friendly heating and hot water solution for every tenant
