Gramm solves noise problem for London Overground

London Overground contacted Gramm Barrier System to solve a problem they were suffering with; the noise caused by a curved raised viaduct track bed. Due to the curve in the track the train had to slow down which caused a squealing sound as the carriages navigated the curve.

London Overground were looking for a completed package that took them from the initial design all the way through to the completed installation. The brief called for the design and installation of a lightweight maintenance free Acoustic Barrier and an absorptive lining along the cess and centre concrete up stands. They also instructed us to produce design calculations, Drawings and Certificates for our Noise Barrier System.

The challenge for this project was the access and working in a rail environment. All the materials had to be transported up the viaduct via the stations stairs. Due to the installation being on a live Railway all works had to be carried out during night time engineering hours and weekend possessions.

Gramm’s recycled plastic barrier was lightweight, extremely hard wearing with a 40 year design life which is also maintenance free. The company also lined the concrete up-stands with an Absorptive tile which could be installed directly next to the wheels which were causing the noise.
