Grand Canal Square Hotel and Residences, South Docklands, Dublin

7 Apr 2009

Client: Heritage Properties
Architect: Manuel Aires Mateus and McCauley Daye O’Connell
Contractor: Pierse Contracting Ltd
Type of works: design, supply and installation of a fan-assisted smoke venting system.

At 10,000 sq m the Grand Canal Square redevelopment is set to play a significant role in revitalising Dublin’s Docklands area. Once complete, the unique space located at the west end of the Grand Canal Dock, will provide a bustling recreational wharf-like environment for the public to enjoy.

The luxury 5-star Le Meridien hotel will open onto the square alongside the dramatic new Daniel Libeskind designed Grand Canal Theatre. Designed by Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus and developed in collaboration with McCauley Day O’Connell, the eyecatching building comprises 189 bedrooms, together with 94 exclusive residential apartments. Restaurants, shops and cafes will be provided at ground level.

Working to the building code for fire safety systems, Fire Design Solutions designed, supplied and installed its Fan Assisted Smoke Venting System (FAS). Using smoke shafts of just 0.5m2, the FAS offers the greatest floor space efficiency of any mechanical smoke venting system available, and gained approval from Dublin’s fire services.
