Hangar 2, Manchester Airport

1 Jun 1993

Value: £278,000
Type of works: design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of hangar doors.

Commissioned by Amec in 1993, Booth provided the complete design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of the hangar doors providing to 72m wide allowing access to the large 747 series Jumbo jets. Originally used by British Airways for maintenance, the hangar is now operated by Air Livery Ltd for aircraft refinishing.

Bi-parting ‘cascade’ operation uses a power-driven motor system to each centre leaf providing simultaneous operation to the two remaining outer leaves, providing a low energy operation. A 22m high-level tail-fin access door reduces the main door leaf height to 17m and energy loss during operation, alternatively each door allow access for smaller aircraft.
