HELIFIX BowTie: the solution for bowed building walls

The recently upgraded BowTie HD, from masonry repair specialist Helifix, is the ideal solution to the problem of bulging and unstable building walls. Fully concealed once installed, it rapidly restores structural stabilisation by securing the wall to internal joists or rafters without the need for any unsightly tie bars or pattress plates.

With its unique profile and registered design, the stainless steel BowTie HD is the market leader in providing bowed walls with lateral restraint. Backed by Helifix’s considerable experience, expertise and technical support, the BowTie HD is fully proven and widely used. Its heavy duty, unique rolled profile with self-cutting end, mechanically connects floor joists or roof timbers. It provides stiffness, generally without the need to install noggins or additional bracing and, once bonded into the masonry, reliably connects the walls to the internal wood frame.

BowTie HDs provide a fast, cost-effective and non-disruptive solution. The installation causes minimal disturbance to the building’s fabric or occupants and with no external restraining plates it is particularly suited to listed or historic buildings.

Installation is very simple. Having marked the installation point on the external wall and lifted a couple of floorboards to check for internal underfloor services, a clearance hole is drilled through the masonry. The BowTie HD is loaded into a power support tool, fitted to an SDS drill and then simply screwed through the first two or three parallel joists. With its self-cutting action it can even be reversed and removed, if required. The Helifix standard BowTie is available where installation into joist ends is required.

John Heseltine, Helifix Technical Manager, said,

“The BowTie HD is a simple yet extremely effective product that gives excellent results. With its own unique rolled profile its cuts through floor joists or roof members very efficiently, without splitting the timber.

Customers can rely on our technical expertise to ensure that the designed repairs use BowTies in the most efficient manner and that they are properly installed by one of our nationwide network of trained Approved Installers.”

A BowTie HD datasheet is available giving applications, installation procedures and technical specifications. All Helifix technical datasheets and over 100 standard Repair Details, covering all common structural masonry faults, can be found at www.helifix.co.uk/downloads.
