Heritage Lock Hut, Manchester

Heritage Lock Hut, Manchester

This Grade II-listed Heritage Lock Hut is located on Manchester Canal. Built in between brick arches, the hut itself is set slightly back from the canal edge. The team at Duggan & Parr undertook this project to clean the hut and restore it back to its former glory.

THE PROBLEM
Tasked with the complete cleaning of the brickwork of the structure, Duggan & Parr had to carefully remove three different types of paint without causing any further damage to the substrate. They also had to maintain the public’s safety throughout the duration of the project.

THE SOLUTION
In order to tackle the three different types of paint, the contractors used three different types of odourless, environmentally-friendly paint softeners suited to each. A very delicate clean was carried out using the ThermaTech super-heated water-based cleaning system, as the building required, since some areas of the brickwork had already suffered extensive damage.

THE OUTCOME
Following a thorough clean using the ThermaTech, the Duggan & Parr team also cut out and repointed the Grade II-listed hut to match Fuel Ash pozzolan. They removed old mortar while ensuring no damage was made to the existing brickwork, before a choice of lime pointing samples was completed for inspection and final approval. Brick replacements and repairs were also completed. This work combined with an extensive clean has resulted in an impressive result as the photos show.
