HMS Trincomalee

10 Apr 2008

Client: HMS Trincomalee
Location: Hartlepool
Type of works: as part of the restoration of the ship, the installation of two vertical platform lifts.

Access Lift Consultants was asked to look at the problem of providing wheelchair access aboard HMS Trincomalee, the last of Nelsons Frigates, which was built in 1817.

The ship sailed the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, and has outlived all of her contemporaries. She is now the oldest British Ship afloat and having been lovingly restored is moored in Hartlepool as a floating museum.

Access Lift Consultants had the task of installing two vertical platform lifts to provide access to the lower decks. The major problem was that the lower decks have very restricted headroom and nothing could be altered to remain in keeping with the ship’s original design. These problems were overcome and the lifts were successfully installed and have been in operation since 2001.
