Client: Jaguar
Contractor: Linpac Storage Systems
Type of works: custom-design of two large, wire mesh storage enclosures.

Industrial storage and safety specialist Troax (UK) Limited has custom-designed two large, wire mesh storage enclosures for Jaguar, to provide secure storage areas for high value vehicle parts at the company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Castle Bromwich, West Midlands where the new XK sports car, XJ and S Type cars are produced.

Troax designed the wire mesh enclosures using its Caelum modular wire mesh partitioning. By relocating the storage area from a central facility to these new freestanding enclosures which are adjacent to the assembly line, Jaguar has been able to greatly improve efficiency by speeding up the supply of parts to the assembly line.

Custom-designed to fit the existing layout within the production area, the cages maximise the use of available space, one measuring approximately 8m? and nearly 7m in height while the other is 9m in length, 2.7m wide and 2.2m high. The cages are fitted with large sliding doors to provide fork lift access.

Although varying greatly in size, both cages are constructed using Caelum all welded, wire mesh panelling which offers a number of important advantages. The mesh creates a translucent and fully visible storage environment yet offers a high level of security. It also allows smoke and heat to filter through to trigger smoke detection systems and allow the penetration of sprinkler systems in the event of a fire.

There was also an additional element to the project, with Troax supplying a series of wire mesh pallet rack safety screens to secure racking in a warehouse at the Castle Bromwich plant. Troax’s Musca all-welded wire mesh panels help to create a safe environment for staff working in this busy part of the warehouse by preventing accidents caused by items falling from racking overhead.

Both the wire mesh enclosures and the safety screens were installed by main contractor Linpac Storage Systems and according to Stephen Beard at Linpac, Troax’s prompt and efficient service was a key factor in the success of the project as he explains: “The project was carried out to a very tight timescale, over a Bank Holiday weekend and Troax’s responsiveness and pro-active attitude was extremely important in ensuring the work was completed on time. Troax has a good name in the industry and we use them frequently. Their systems are excellent quality and we know we can rely on their service.”
