Dulwich College, founded in 1619, is an independent school for boys in southeast London. They specified Kemmlit to install 200 bespoke lockers faced with a cherry wood veneer for their new premises.

This historic college recently opened phase 1 of a multimillion pound, 4400m2 Science Building named the’ Laboratory’ ‘designed by architects Grimshaw and built by McLaren.

The ‘Laboratory’ is arranged over three floors and will provide new teaching facilities for science and IT skills, including 21 teaching laboratories, five IT suites, communal spaces, a 240 seat auditorium and an exhibition space currently housing the famous James Caird lifeboat which was used by polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, a former pupil, after his ship Endurance was crushed by an ice in the South Atlantic Ocean in 1917.

In keeping with the sustainability and high specification requirements of the building’s construction materials, Grimshaw requested Kemmlit to supply and install 200 bespoke lockers faced with a cherry wood veneer, the wood carcasses having a matching cherry wood finish over melamine faced mdf board.

A number of the lockers were supplied with glass fronts to house exhibits including some from Shackleton’s expeditions.

Kemmlit also supplied the slatted ventilation elements which were also faced in cherry wood.
