Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, with its approved fabricator Anglia Fixing Ltd, supplied Comar 5P.i. windows for the complete window refurbishment of the London Borough of Redbridge imposing offices at Clements Road, Ilford, Essex.

This project had to be completed whilst the offices were occupied, with the majority of the work being carried out in the evening and at weekends. During the initial refurbishment process, asbestos was discovered and this had to be removed before the window installation could be completed. It was vital that the windows selected matched the 1960’s façade. Exacting planning conditions meant that Comar 5P.i. was a natural selection. Comar 5P.i’s slim 60mm sight lines, in all configurations and ability to glaze large windows up to 45mm, ensured that the façade was updated with thermally efficient windows and created a contemporary façade with reference to the original design.

A variety of Comar 5P.i. windows were selected because Anglia Fixing could rely on Comar to deliver to these strict installation time schedules. Side-hung casements were installed and these were both internally and externally beaded 28mm DG units. The windows were hung on heavy duty stainless-steel friction hinges with integral restrictor devices to limit the initial opening to 100mm and an Espagnolette locking system operated by push-button key-locking handles in a White finish, completed with adjustable trickle vents through a side-hung vent bar providing a free airflow of 4000m² per window.

Self-cleaning Pilkington’s Activ™ Blue and Pilkington’s Activ™ Stippolyte (patterned obscure) toughened safety glass was fitted as the outer panes, providing a centre pane U-value of 1.2/m²K.

All Comar approved fabricators are required to have the technical expertise to attend pre-site meetings and provide detailing. Anglia Fixing Ltd liaised closely with the specifiers to provide design advice and detailing, which ensured the project ran smoothly, adhered to strict budget restraints and met site deadlines.
