Make it Safe

7 Jan 2011

Child safety for window-blind systems is an issue that must now be taken into account in building design. Changes to EN13120, the standard for internal blinds, are now being formulated that will be effective during this year and will change the specification requirements.

The problem concerns looped cords that have resulted in strangulation, rather than single cords. Whilst this affects commercial areas where young children could circulate, such as nurseries, community centres, restaurants and hotels it is now proposed that all commercial buildings including offices will need compliant products as well as all domestic premises. It is likely that many of the safety devices currently in use will not meet the requirements.

A Make it Safe information video and advice on current and proposed requirements is on www.hallmarkblinds.co.uk.

Hallmark Blinds will be providing updates as changes are introduced. To receive these register at mis@hallmarkblinds.co.uk.
