Marks and Spencer, Sheffield

17 Aug 2011

Client: Marks and Spencer
Type of works: supply and installation of a green wall

When the truly sustainable store was opened in Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, the assertive living wall forms an important part of the buildingʼs envelope. The new store, covering approx 12,400 sq ft, was built from scratch on a former brownfield site.

The whole bent of design was sustainability and a number of notable features have been incorporated, including LED lighting as opposed to standard lighting, reclaimed bricks from a local mill, rainwater harvesting reducing mainswater, natural ventilation and electric car charging points in the car park.

A green roof, consisting of sedum planting was also supplied by ANS, along with the living wall, creating wildlife habitats. Considerable insulating benefits also come with the package; all water for the irrigation system is taken from the underground, rainwater harvesting tank.
