Client: Dorset County Council
Type of works: supplying and installing the paving for a new footbridge
SureSet completed a project for Dorset County Council by supplying and installing the paving for a new footbridge at Newtons Cove in Weymouth.
The stainless steel footbridge forms part of the south west coastal path, which extends along the coastline from Poole Harbour to Clevedon in North Somerset. This light, elegant structure was designed to replace the rather unsightly concrete bridge that had been in situ since the 1970s, with the material specification required to reflect the aesthetics of the local Jurassic coastline.
The paving design was developed by Chris Tipping, his intricate scheme drawing inspiration from the local land and seascapes as well as a number of familiar cartographic symbols and annotations. Given the complexity of the design and the relatively exposed location of the bridge, a versatile, durable and robust paving surface was required: SureSet resin bound paving providing the ideal solution.
Working closely with SureSet, Chris selected a combination of Sterling Silver, Charcoal, Winter Frost and Harvest Buff aggregates drawn from the companys extensive crushed rock and natural gravel ranges. Commenting on the completed scheme, he said: The project has been a great success. It was a collaborative approach and the SureSet team contributed significantly throughout the project, providing creative solutions as to how the bespoke aggregate detailing could be installed successfully. The design elements of the bridge, from the laser-cut stainless steel parapets to the SureSet bespoke resin bonded aggregate inlaid detailing, reflect this spectacular coastal vision.
Not only does the footbridge provide immediate benefits, but it will also provide a great platform for spectators to view the sailing events which will be taking place in the bay as part of the 2012 Olympic Games
As typified by the Newtons Cove project, a SureSet surface can replicate intricate and complex designs with great precision, providing clients with design flexibility that no other paving can match.
