Newton System 500 used on Grade II Listed Building, York

Newton System 500 was quick to install, and met with listed building requirements.

This beautiful Grade Two listed building in York had an expansive existing basement area which the client wanted to convert to a high tech cinema and home entertainment area. Previously the property had been “tanked” using a combination of bitumen and cement based waterproof renders. The tanking system had failed letting water into the basement area.

Newton Specialist Basement Contractor Pure Property Care were commissioned to design and install a robust structural waterproofing system in accordance with BS8102:2009.

Methodology
Pure’s waterproofing design was to utilise the Type C Newton System 500 Drained Cavity membrane system. This system incorporated mechanically fixing Newton 508 dimpled sheet membranes to the listed brickwork using Newton Mulitplugs. Once the wall membrane was installed Newton 520 membrane was installed onto the slab. A screed was installed on the floor membrane and an independent dry lining frame was installed in front of the 8mm wall membrane which was insulated and finished with 12.5mm plasterboard.

An internal perimeter drain, Newton Basedrain was installed at the wall/ floor junction as a means of moving any water that entered the system to an evacuation point.

On this particular project, due to the floor area being very large, two sump chambers (Titan Pro) with twin NP400 pumps were installed to mechanically remove the water.

Result
• The Newton System was quick to install with minimal surface preparation. The system could be installed over existing failed tanking to which the removal would have done significant damage to the building fabric.
• Pure’s waterproofing design was deemed “maintainable” by installing the Basedrain - a prerequisite to conform to the British Standard. In addition, the Newton System 500 internal drained cavity system is “reversible” which is a necessity when dealing with any form of listed building when choosing a waterproofing system.
• Pure could offer the client an insured backed guarantee for the installation - the highest degree of guarantee in the structural waterproofing industry.
