Oak Lodge Nursing Home, Bitterne, Southampton

Client: Bupa, Southampton City Council
Type of works: design, manufacture and installation of Richard Burbidge FUSION® Commercial stair balustrade.

As part of Bupa and Southampton City Council’s plan to improve facilities for older people in the area, Richard Burbidge FUSION® Commercial stair balustrade has been fitted at the new purpose-built Oak Lodge Nursing Home.

Located in the pleasant residential area of Bitterne, the 71-bed care home is close to local shops and provides much needed specialist dementia care facilities as well as a day centre for the elderly. Oak Lodge aims to provide a welcoming and comfortable environment, thanks to its thoughtful layout and range of facilities that are both homely and safe for all residents to enjoy.

FUSION® Commercial stair balustrade was installed on the main staircase to provide a safe and stylish barrier. The system’s combination of minimalist oak handrails and sleek tubular balusters in a contemporary brushed nickel finish complemented the building’s modern décor and other good quality furnishings, whilst its availability off-the-shelf meant there were no lengthy lead times.

Richard Burbidge also supplied wall-mounted handrails to various corridors within the home. FUSION® Commercial is compliant with UK Building Regulations for communal areas and has been tested to withstand loadings of 0.74kN/m, making it suitable for shared stairwells in public and residential buildings.

Sandy Scott of Bupa Care Services, commented: “Oak Lodge’s residents were the top priority when selecting FUSION® Commercial stair balustrade, as we had to carefully consider the use of décor to aid orientation. Its unique mix of timber and metal means it provides modern and minimalist elegance, which complements the décor of the nursing home perfectly.

“The Richard Burbidge system is independently strength tested in line with UK Building Regulations, providing an important safety barrier for staff and residents, so the product not only looks attractive but is also fit for purpose. In fact, we have been so impressed with the system we plan to use it for future specification projects.”

David Richards, Specification and Trade Marketing Manager for Richard Burbidge, added: “We are incredibly proud that our FUSION® Commercial system has been chosen for such a valuable addition to the Southampton community.

“It’s availability off-the-shelf makes it ideal for one-off projects such as this, as we’re able to supply a quality product on a quick turnaround at a more competitive price than many bespoke systems.”

Easy to install, all FUSION® Commercial timber components are supplied pre-cut and pre-varnished, eliminating the need for time consuming finishing. In addition, the brushed nickel balusters are also supplied pre-cut and ready to fit.

Richard Burbidge offers a wide range of resources and added-value services for specifiers and architects, including RIBA approved CPD seminars on stair balustrade, CAD drawings, two online planning tools and downloadable specification guides. Plus, the company also offers a bespoke planning service, providing fully priced solutions for individual project plans.
