Architect: John Neil Partnership
Contractor: P Elliott & Co Ltd
Type of works: supply of over 925 linear metres of Isolan® connectors.

Ancon Isolan® balcony connectors minimise cold bridging at the interface between concrete balconies and concrete floors. They are a simple and cost-effective solution.

Over 925 linear metres of Isolan® connectors were used on the Priors Gate six-storey, mixed-use, development in Tallaght, Ireland.

Isolan® units incorporate CFC-free Styropor insulation, and 1.4462 duplex
stainless-steel shear reinforcement. An innovative, patented, concept, the system uses standard grade 500B reinforcing bars to provide tension and compression reinforcement.

Priors Gate uses a combination of standard and special configurations in the slabs, typically 220mm deep.

The connectors are modular in their construction, with units being supplied in short lengths to facilitate transportation and handling. Individual units are then connected
end-to-end, to form a continuous thermal break along the construction joint between balcony and slab.

This proven system is manufactured, under license, by Ancon Building Products. Standard sections are held in stock, enabling Ancon to respond quickly to orders. Units for a first pour are usually available within 5 working days.

The main contractor on Priors Gate is P Elliott & Co Ltd. Isolan was specified by John Neil Partnership architects. The system was supplied via Long Construction Services.

Damien Long, of Long Construction Services, said: “The ability for the contractor to use standard reinforcing bars for tension and compression reinforcement was of prime importance, as this led to a cost-effective solution to the problem of thermal bridging at the balcony locations. The Isolan® system provided the architect with a solution that met all relevant performance criteria.”
