Spectraplan has provided an innovative roofing solution for a major refurbishment to the newly named, Jack Jones House in Liverpool. Designed and built in the 1970’s, Jack Jones House (formerly Transport House) has been totally refurbished and renamed for Unite, the trade union. Jack Jones was the former leader of the TGWU, the Transport and General Workers’ Union.

Planning consent was granted to refurbish the entire building creating a 30,000 sq ft District HQ for Unite. The project included a complete re-cladding of the exterior using a sandstone render that is in keeping with the appearance of other buildings in the area. The renovation has won several prestigious awards including the ‘Gold International Built Environment and Architectural Heritage Award’, presented by the Green Organisation in June 2011.

For the main flat roof area, Spectraplan SG120 light grey single ply membrane was installed and Spectraplan SG120 dark grey together with matching standing seam profiles was used on the external façade to imitate a lead roof. This cost effective solution provided an appealing aesthetic in keeping with the building’s newly designed character.

Offering exceptional mechanical strength, enhanced UV stability and long term waterproofing performance, the Spectraplan TPE system offers the most advanced polymer technology available in the industry. Safe, reliable welding characteristics make it the material of choice for complex roof structures and those requiring rapid installation.

Spectraplan membranes are increasingly being chosen to replicate metal roofing materials on buildings. Single ply membranes offer a similar appearance of material such as lead, copper and aluminium, have obvious cost and performance benefits and yet have no appeal to the materials thief.

Spectraplan is only available in the UK from SIG Design & Technology and can only be installed by an IKO Single Ply trained and licensed contractor.
