Romney House data centre, Bristol City Council

Bristol City Council’s policy on the environment is to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels by conserving energy and promoting the use of renewable sources within the council and the wider Bristol community.

The data centre at Romney House was being cooled 365 days a year by 5 computer room air-conditioning units (CRACS) which were consuming a vast amount of power, this was working out at between 50 and 60kW of power per month.

EcoCooling had already cooled Bristol Council's new call centre at Somerfield house and was asked to look at the data centre to see if both running costs and the carbon footprint could be reduced. The solution provided involved the installation of 6 roof-mounted EcoCoolers with attenuated extract systems providing over 200kW of cooling.

The expected savings compared to the old inefficient system are estimated to be £60,000 of electricity per annum and over 438 tonnes of carbon.
