RoofDek® for South West Energy Centre, Devon

Boasting BREEAM Excellent credentials, the South West Energy Centre building in Devon appropriately features an impressive curved green sedum roof, featuring RoofDek D32s and D100 structural roof decking by Tata Steel.

The new South West Energy Centre at Paignton’s South Devon College offers a wide range of training courses that include renewable technology, energy efficiency and sustainable construction.

With a BREEAM Excellent rating, the building features a wide range of energy saving features, including thermal cooling through night vents, computer-managed energy systems, a biomass boiler and optimum daylight to reduce lighting requirements.

The Centre’s green sedum roof is fully accessible to show solar PV and solar thermal technologies in action. It encourages biodiversity on the site and also helps to manage drainage and water consumption. It features structural decks by Tata Steel; 820m2 of RoofDek D100 and 62m2 of RoofDek D32s, installed by Composite Profiles UK Limited.

RoofDek D100 was used as the structural deck for the main roof, at a pitch of 18°. Composite Profiles were required to incorporate air sealing into the installation, using mastic sealant tapes and filler blocks.

The D100 deck was supplied as 10.12m multi-span sheets to provide maximum cover and ensure minimum junctions for potential air loss.

RoofDek D32s was used to cap the stairs and was at a pitch of 31° and again necessitated the incorporation of air sealing.
