Safetread rubber walkways for West St Leonards Childrens Centre

The client, East Sussex County Council tasked URS architects working with main contractor Bramber Construction to upgrade access at West St Leonards Childrens Centre to modern DDA compatible ramps and steps.

The site had existing steel fabricated ramps and steps but these were slippery in wet conditions and young children were vulnerable to injuries if they fell on walkway surfaces. As it was a nursery application the ramps were specified with Safetread rubber walkways and where the threshold height exceeded 500mm the handrails were specified with infilled handrail section to comply with Doc K regulations. The entire underside of structure was infilled with mesh to prevent access to minors. The project was completed in 4 days on site and was complicated from an installation point of view as we had to infill between wall and ramp to prevent rubbish collecting below ramp. To ensure full DDA compliance the steps nosings and ramp changes were indicated in yellow GRP capping
