Self-build project, South Yorkshire

21 Oct 2008

Type of works: Goxhill clay plain tiles used in self-build project.

Nicola Murray's stunning design for her self-build project in South Yorkshire does, by her own admission, owe much to the use of the Dark Chestnut Goxhill hand-made clay plain tiles. Using vertical tiling on walls and dormers and feature tiles on the roof, the end result proves how hand-made tiles can be used on a design mixing contemporary and traditional features.

Shortlisted for the prestigious Clay Roof Tile Council Clay Roofing awards in May, the unusually named "Ticklim" is in every respect unique, both internally and externally. The roof is a feature in its own right, the Dark Chestnut colour in particular contributing to an overall effect which could not have been achieved using a traditional red plain tile.

Sandtoft's Sales and Marketing Director Nick Oldridge commented: "It is easy for manufacturers to enthuse about the use of their own tiles, but the thought which has gone in to the design of this property encapsuates everything we advocate about designing roofs as a key element of a property."
