Sika 1 Pre-bagged Waterproofing System Used In Youth Centre

As part of the Department for Education’s (DfE) £240 million myplace programme, funding 63 new youth facilities projects across England, an old hospital building in Nottingham has been transformed into a state-of-the-art youth centre. Following an extensive redesign and reconfiguration process that included construction of a basement music recording studio, it was essential that the building was made watertight. With its proven track records, stretching back over 100 years, Sika 1 Pre-bagged Waterproofing System from global building products manufacturer, Sika was specified.

Designed by the architectural department of Nottingham City Council, the refurbishment and extension works have been completed by main contractor Wates. The project has seen the creation of a facility that features state-of-the-art musical recording facilities – including new practice booths, a music store, studio/teaching space and radio station.

To ensure the basement provides a safe, comfortable and most importantly watertight environment, Nottingham City Council turned to specialist contractor, Bosa Contracts. The company, a member of the Sika Registered waterproofing Contractor scheme, has extensive experience in the application of Sika 1 Pre-bagged Waterproofing System across a wide and varied range of successful waterproofing projects.

“We have been using Sika 1 Pre-bagged Waterproofing System for more than 16 years,” said Richard Walker, Managing Director at Bosa Contracts. “Some of our operatives have been applying the system for 25 to 30 years and have found it to be a reliable, long term solution for all types of waterproofing challenges. With the Sika 1 Pre-bagged Waterproofing System – you know that once the job is done, it’s done.”

Sika 1 Pre-bagged Waterproofing System incorporates a specially developed admixture – a unique colloidal liquid – which is mixed with specially blended pre-bagged mortars. Once it has been hand applied to the walls and floors, the admixture reacts to water by turning into a jelly-like substance, blocking all gaps and capillaries, and providing an impregnable and invisible seal. Bonding monolithically with the substrate, it essentially becomes one with the structure.

Bosa Contracts completed the waterproofing application to the highest standard possible, achieving Grade Three usage in the updated BS 8102:2009 – Code of practice for protection of below ground structures against water from the ground. The Sika 1 Prebagged System is a Type 1 System in accordance with the British Standard and is suitable for applications to all basements including where the water table classification is high and permanently above the underside of the base slab. Sika 1 Pre–bagged waterproofing system has also been certified by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) to last the life of the building, providing exceptional standards of durability and reliability.

As well as BBA certification Sika 1 Pre-bagged Waterproofing System is supported with the Sika Waterproofing Registered Contractor Scheme, a scheme that has been created to minimise risk for specifiers, main contractors and clients. It ensures that all projects that require waterproofing benefit from the proven performance of Sika 1 Pre-bagged Waterproofing System, matched with exceptional technical service from Sika’s team and first class installation from one of the company’s Registered Contractors.

Set to open in March 2012, the groundbreaking youth centre will provide a creative and welcoming focal point for youngsters aged 13-19 from all over Nottingham. Hosting a range of facilities including a music recording studio, DVD production area, dance studio, café and a gym, the use of Sika 1 Pre–bagged waterproofing system has provided peace of mind that the basement will stay dry for generations.
