Sir Henry Royce Institute – Manchester

Completed in 2020, the Sir Henry Royce Institute (SHRI) is a £235 million investment based on a hub and spoke model, with the hub at The University of Manchester and spokes at the founding partners: the universities of Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College London, as well as theCulham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) and the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL).

The SHRI provides the UK with a world-leading research and innovation base in advanced materials technology that underpins all industrial sectors; the research will encompass Two- dimensional Materials, Materials for Demanding Environments, Nuclear Materials and Bio-medical Systems and Devices. The ninestorey building, designed by architects NBBJ, will contain state of the art equipment supporting these four core areas.

Working closely with the façade contractor, Inasus UK Ltd 9 no. FIEGER FLW 32 SmoTec units were supplied to meet the Approved Document B requirement for end of corridor.

The vents were manufactured to incorporate triple-glazed elements supplied by Inasus UK, together with purpose designed glazing adapters to match their curtain walling system.

A two-tone powder coating finish was used to RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey outside and RAL 9006 White Aluminium inside.

24 Volt DC motors were fitted with built-in auxiliary contacts to facilitate connection to the Building Management System.

In addition to being CE marked for use as part of the fire protection systems, having been tested to EN 12101-2 for natural smoke vents, the FIEGER FLW 32 is also barrier load tested to BS 6180: 2011.

In addition to providing smoke venting to the corridors on each level, FIEGER also supplied 4 no. FLW 32 vents to the Plant Room comprising insulated aluminium panel louvre blades.

Due to the height of these units, at 4570 mm, the vents were each supplied in three sections to facilitate handling & installation on site.

These vents were also SmoTec units, providing a dual-purpose general ventilation and emergency smoke control function.
