Spiral staircases offer the versatility of using various materials, which enables Spiral Construction to design and manufacture spiral staircases that are elegant, functional and robust. The company has refined a number of production techniques to offer an extensive range of finishes and textures:
Concrete
Pre-cast concrete is versatile meaning it can be used for both internal and external staircases.
Internal - Concrete staircases for internal use are normally supplied in a white fair face finish with a recess to the top surface to receive a floor finish. Alternatively, treads can be supplied in a plain finish or with a non-slip carborundum nosing. The concrete is treated with a silicon sealer to protect the finish and allow easy cleaning.
External - It is essential that all outdoor staircases have a non-slip surface to ensure safety for users. Treads are normally supplied with a non-slip carborundum nosing or a shot-blasted surface. External staircases are available with the invisible 'Sno-melt' electric trace heating system to give protection against ice and snow.
Steel
Steel is the most popular metal for spiral staircase construction, offering strength, versatility and economy.
Internal - Metal spiral stairs for internal applications are normally supplied in smooth steel plate to receive carpet or floor finishes by others. Treads can also be supplied with a carpet recess or tray to receive screed. Metalwork is supplied in a powder coated finish to any standard colour.
External - Outdoor spiral staircases are normally supplied in durbar chequerplate, which gives an excellent non-slip surface. Treads are also offered in open mesh material for external applications. All external staircases are supplied in a hot dip galvanised finish to give long term corrosion protection.
Timber
Spirals range of wood spiral stairs combines the strength of a steel centre column with the beauty and durability of natural wood. This type of staircase is normally only supplied for internal applications.
Treads for spiral stairs are manufactured in solid timber including oak, ash, maple, beech and walnut. All timbers are obtained from managed plantations and sustainable forestry. The beauty of the timber is protected and enhanced by protective lacquer with the central steel column and support brackets being supplied powder coated or stainless steel.
Glass
For prestige internal locations, stairs with glass treads can be manufactured, normally combined with a stainless steel supporting structure to produce a stunning ultra modern appearance.
The treads are manufactured from triple laminate toughened glass with the top surface etched or sand blasted to give a suitable non-slip finish.
The balustrading design is normally a combination of stainless steel and curved glass panels or an all stainless helical system, with the option of a stringer to the outside of the treads to emphasise the graceful sweep of the stair.
A glass staircases gives the appearance of a floating transparent stair which when the light shows through look fantastic.
