Type of works: design and manufacture of Richard Burbidge FUSION®
When spectators see the final putt sunk on the last day of the English Open 2011 at St Mellion International Resort, they’ll also get a glimpse of the outdoor balustrade system supplied by Richard Burbidge, which has been installed on the prestigious hotel’s balconies to provide a safe and stylish vantage point.

Located on the Cornwall and Devon border, St Mellion International Resort has recently undergone a £20million refurbishment. Set in 450 acres, the complex now offers a contemporary 4-star hotel, an impressive leisure facility with 3 pools and a spa, and a selection of restaurants. The resort also boasts two championship golf courses, one of which was the UK’s first Jack Nicklaus designed Signature Course.

Richard Burbidge worked closely with architects Pearn & Proctor, who specified FUSION® Commercial outdoor balustrade with glass panels for all guest balconies on the three-storey hotel. Its modern mix of metal newels and hardwood handrails makes it ideal for contemporary settings, whilst the large glass infill panels maximise the sense of space on the balconies and allow an unobstructed view of the 18th fairway.

Thierry Jung, Hotel Manager at St Mellion International Resort, comments: “We are privileged to be hosting the English Open next year, so it was crucial that all work was completed on time and more importantly to a high standard. The glass panel system from Richard Burbidge complements the hotel’s modern exterior, whilst the product’s quality ensures it will remain looking good for years to come.

“In addition, the safety of our guests is paramount, so the balustrade system needed to be strength tested in line with Building Regulations. FUSION® Commercial meets the relevant requirements, providing peace of mind for the hotel and its guests.”

FUSION® Commercial is independently tested by FIRA to withstand loadings of 1.5kN/m, fulfilling the requirements under British Standards. This makes the system suitable for use in public buildings, as well as high level decks or balconies.

The system combines timber rails with metal newels and connectors to create its distinctive finish, and is available with a choice of infill options – hardwood balusters, hardwood slatted panels and glass panels.

David Richards, Specification and Trade Marketing Manager for Richard Burbidge, adds: “We are pleased to have been involved in such a major development. The FUSION® Commercial system provides a stunning backdrop to the 18th fairway, as well as unparalleled views for hotel guests.

“FUSION® Commercial is an ideal system for leisure and sports facilities, in particular, the glass panel system is great for public viewing areas. Plus, as it’s available off-the-shelf, we are able to meet with hectic build schedules for both small private health clubs and larger sporting venues.”

Richard Burbidge offers a wide range of resources and added-value services for specifiers and architects, including RIBA approved CPD seminars on stair balustrade, CAD drawings, two online planning tools and downloadable specification guides. Plus, the company also offers a bespoke planning service, providing fully priced solutions for individual project plans.
