St Paul's Academy, Greenwich

Architect: HNW
Contractor: Rydon
Type of works: design and manufacture of Leaderflush Shapland's Designer doorsets.

278 doorsets from Leaderflush Shapland’s Designer range were specified for the £21 million St Paul’s Academy project in Greenwich which will replace an existing, dilapidated secondary school and cater for 1,200 children aged from 11 to 16.

The two-storey scheme includes sports and assembly hall, kitchen and refectory, admin spaces and general teaching spaces as well as specialist areas that include dance and drama, music, food technology, science laboratories, multi-materials laboratories, new resources for the local community and associated external hard and soft landscaping. The development is arranged around a covered gallery from which the six separate learning areas can be accessed.

Architects for the project are HNW who aim to create a building of civic stature that welcomes the community and significantly improves the learning experience of its students. The project was registered with the Considerate Contractor Scheme where the main contractor, Rydon, scored the maximum mark available on the first assessment.

Leaderflush Shapland doorsets and screens were the natural choice for their functionality, durability and style and because of the company’s extensive knowledge and experience in the education sector; its wide range of innovative products and finishes are suitable for almost any application.

The doorsets were of EnduraCor core construction in a variety of facings: Light-Green and Grey laminate, primed for on-site painting and quarter-cut American White Oak veneer. Performance characteristics included fire resistance of up to 60 minutes, sound reduction and anti-microbial protection. Hygienilac, Leaderflush Shapland’s highly effective anti-microbial additive, which kills most harmful bacteria including C.diff, MRSA, Salmonella and E.coli, is added as standard to the wood lacquer on all Leaderflush Shapland veneered doorsets, providing protection against harmful bacteria that can be found in educational environments.

EnduraCor is an engineered performance core which is both versatile and stable. Its components; comprising a flax board core, MDF sub-facing and softwood stiles and rails, underpins its superior durability, making it especially suitable for educational environments. EnduraCor is manufactured using sustainable materials in accordance with BRE and achieves a Green Book A rating, so aiding architects, HNW, to achieve the requirement of ‘Very Good’ in the new BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) for Schools.
