The recently launched Kingspan KS2000 RW 2m wide trapezoidal panel played a crucial role in the remarkable installation of a 3,000m2 roof in a single day. Project WIP is an industrial unit on a business park in Swansea Vale, West Glamorgan, and the results achieved in such a short space of time demonstrate the very best that modern construction methods, engineered design and partnership working can offer.
One of the principal advantages of KS2000 RW is its fast track construction capability. The new increased cover width reduces the number of side laps which require fixing and the ability to provide panel lengths of up to 20m reduces the number of end laps. The panels used for the WIP project were 16m in length and 80mm thick to achieve a U value of 0.25 W/m2K.
Main contractors, Cowlin Construction Limited, and roofing and cladding contractors ABS Elbrow, worked closely with Kingspan Insulated Panels and specialist lifting equipment suppliers Oktopus to ensure that everything went smoothly on the day. Installation started at 9:30am, with four operatives on the roof and two on the ground, and was completed by 5:00pm taking just 7.5 hours for six men to install the 3,000m2 roof using the mechanical handling equipment. By comparison, a typical built-up system could take up to 4 weeks for eight men to install a roof of this size.
Mark Stephens, Project Manager for Cowlin Construction, said: The single day installation of the roof at the Olympus project was hugely advantageous to us for many reasons. The speed of the installation was a major influence in achieving our completion date, we poured slabs and laid blockwork undercover during the inclement weather we were experiencing and were able to clad the building much earlier than was expected. On a safety note, the working at height time was reduced from a potential two weeks to a single day. This has to be the way forward!
