17 EcoCooling side discharge CRECs were used to feed 50 cubic meters of air per second into the the cold aisle and 7 EC wall mounted fans provide extraction. Initial results show this whole system only adds 0.05 to the PUE. The system is controlled using a Shneider Crouzet PLC designed and built by EcoCooling. This controls the coolers, dampers and fans to provide ASHRAE compliant temperature conditions the whole year round. Key data and fault finding is communicated through the internal network. It is also fully integrated into the fire system.
Further to the successful cooling of the UPS room in 2010, EcoCooling were asked to design the cooling system for the Tier 3 500kW Data Centre in Surrey. The project objectives were to both improve efficiency and release power whilst working towards a PUE of 1.1
Since the ambient temperature is so low most of the time in the UK, it is possible at no extra cost to run the data centre at a set temperature of 18.5C. This allows a more comfortable environment for operators and also reduces temperature related failures. The cold temperatures which can cause non-compliant conditions are prevented using a patented attemperation system which allows the cool air to be mixed back in with warm air from the servers to provide air at the correct temperature.
The data centre has now made the first steps in the path towards achieving a PUE of under 1.1 and has reduced its cooling power consumption by over 90%.
