Project: Leicester market
Architects: Greig & Stephenson

Plans have been submitted for a new food hall at Leicester’s 700-year-old market – the largest outdoor covered market in Europe.

The £2M plans, that have been submitted to Leicester Council. And include a a steel, glass and timber pavilion whose curved zinc roof would draw the eye up to the adjacent grade II*-listed Corn Exchange building.

The new building would be lightly connected to the Corn Exchange by a glazed “divide” which articulates the two forms, said Nigel Stephenson, partner at Greig & Stephenson.

The plan is the first element of a £7m scheme, also being devised by Greig & Stephenson, and intended to regenerate Leicester’s central Market Place area. If conservation area consent is given for the demolition of the existing post-war building, it will be replaced by a new public square.
