Barbour Product Search, in association with Barbour ABI, will from now on, start giving you a weekly taster of new and noteworthy projects that are happening in the UK.

Project: Carshalton Boys Sports College in Sutton.
Architect: Fraser Brown McKenna
Start date: Jan 2013

Architecture firm Fraser Brown McKenna has been granted planning permission for a 775sq metre classroom at Carshalton Boys Sports College in Sutton.

The new building replaces an existing, outdated temporary building with eight new classrooms and staff offices along with a plant room and exterior landscaping at the academy school, which has been included in the 100 ‘most improved schools’ for the past three years running.

The single storey structure will form a low rectangle with canopied entrances at each end with an exterior featuring colour-coated profiled aluminum cladding. Windows and doors are aluminum framed.

Funded through the Academy Capital Maintenance Fund, the contractor will be appointed from the client’s select tender list. The new building utilises off-site manufacture to meet sustainability requirements and budget restraints.

Fraser Brown McKenna said: “We are delighted to be working on this project. Our challenge has been to maximise the spatial quality of the new classrooms on a tight budget.

“A rhythmic sequence of rooflights and full height vision panels to the corridor, allowing every space to be flooded with daylight and enhance the building’s connection with the landscape. The arrangement of the perforated pre-weathered steel panels in the facade emphasises and enhance this rhythm.

Work is expected to begin in January and will end, seven months later, in August.
