Troax's Toledo Partitioning Creates New Production Facilities at Gallaher Tobacco Factory

Troax’s Titan (formerly Toledo) cleanroom partitioning system has been used to create two separate production areas at Gallaher’s tobacco factory in Belfast. The partitioning was used to divide an existing manufacturing facility, creating cleanroom type environments for two different areas, one used for the production of pipe tobacco, the other for the production of roll-your-own tobacco.

Gallaher’s is now part of Japan Tobacco International, the international tobacco business of Japan Tobacco, the world’s third largest tobacco manufacturer. Its brands include Silk Cut, Benson and Hedges, Hamlet Cigars and Old Holborn.

Toledo modular, steel, cleanroom partitioning was specified for the project as, with its minimal ledges and corners and high-quality construction, it would meet the strict hygiene and cleanliness requirements demanded by Gallaher’s. The partitioning was installed by contractor Thrislington (NI) Ltd.

Thrislington used Toledo steel panels to build the floor to ceiling wall which now divides the production area. A series of double glazed panels, measuring 3.2m high x 500mm wide, have been specially designed and incorporated into the partitioning, both to let in light and to create a more attractive design. Single and double doors, also built using Toledo panels, have also been incorporated into the wall.

Toledo’s modular design made it ideal for this project, which involved building the dividing wall right up into the curved roof space. Installers had to cut the partitioning on site to fit the curved contours of the roof, which was made easier by Toledo’s easy-to-fit modular construction.

This is the latest in a series of similar projects carried out at Gallaher’s by Thrislington using Toledo partitioning. The company has developed a long-standing working relationship with Troax over many years, as Jim Hodgen at Thrislington explains: “We’ve worked regularly with Troax for some years now and have always been very satisfied with their service. They’re a great company to work with and the quality of their products is always excellent.”

“Toledo partitioning is ideal for this type of project where a cleanroom type of environment is required. Its smooth surfaces and lack of ledges, prevent the collection of particles so help to create the controlled, dust-free environment needed for this type of production facility. And, of course, its modular design meant that we could easily adapt the partitioning on site to fit the building’s unusual curved roof.”

Toledo solid steel partitioning is specifically designed for cleanroom applications. Produced in a steel, monobloc construction, it uses an inert and non-particle shedding infill finish. To prevent the collection of particles and ensure easy-to-clean, smooth surfaces, Toledo is coated in powder paint and has a two-line panel junction and flush line double glazing, resulting in minimal ledges and corners and flush surfaces.
