Unity Sentinel, Liverpool

Unity Sentinel, Liverpool

Client: Rumford Investments
Architect: Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM)
Contractor: Laing O'Rourke
Facades contractor: Dane Architectural Systems
Type of works: Kingframe facade systems have been used for the Unity Sentinel development, one of the first major buildings on the Liverpool waterfront since it was named European City of Culture 2008.

The £60 million Unity Sentinel development consists of a 27-storey residential tower and a 16-storey office tower, the first Grade A office building in Liverpool. The resulting buildings will form a striking landmark behind the Waterfront, which has just been awarded World Heritage Status.

The project has involved the design and manufacture of 1,500 frame assemblies, up to 5.2m width x 3.2m height. The frames incorporate Kingspan K15 phenolic insulation and a carrier bracket system which retains the outer aluminium rainscreen.

Schueco aluminium windows have been integrated into the facade system units. Fire engineering solutions at intermediate floors and compartmentation junctions utilise Hilti Firestop Systems, which also provide Building Regulations Part E, acoustic separation, where necessary.

Dane Architectural Systems from Newcastle designed and installed the facade system. The restricted access on site was one important reason why the off-site system was chosen, according to Dane contracts manager William Morrison, who says: 'For tight city centre sites the product has no comparison. There’s no waste, no packaging and no skips to worry about.'

Work on the building is continuing to plan and is scheduled for completion in Autumn 2006.
