Urban Park, Portlaoise

Client: Civic Trust Awards Scheme
Architect: Milligan Reside Larkin
Contractor: Regan Civil Engineering
Type of works: supply of Italia-40 and Italia-80 steel louvred panels

The Civic Trust Awards Scheme was established in 1959 to recognise outstanding architecture, planning and design in the built environment. Amongst its most recent awards, the CTA commended a new urban park at Portlaoise which includes a performance space and recreation area. It is hoped that programmes of events and activities will encourage the public to engage with this attractive new space.

A low level car park forms an intrinsic part of the development and Lang+Fulton supplied the screening for this area from their Italia range of steel louvres.

Panels of Italia-40 were recommended to provide the required ventilation to the lower floor of car parking with Italia-80 to the raised level, offering the desired effect of visual screening. The support steelwork for the panels was fixed to the underlying concrete structure at an angle to create an interesting architectural effect.
